The 'cu' variant is common and included it appears in the default raspbian distribution. This is (I believe) a fairly new adaptor, hence it's lack of built-in support. It must not be in firmware-realtek.

Another way of doing things is recompiling the kernel with the proper options set. The fastest and easiest way is using cross compiling on another linux system. I use virtualbox and a virtual ubuntu pc for that purpose. Problem is that you have to do it again every time the kernel is updated.
